Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very nice Austrian percussion cavalry pistol, in approximately 0.57” caliber. It features a rifled barrel 10 3/8” in length, with an overall length of 16”. It follows the classic Austrian style, with all iron mountings, and has no provision for a ramrod. Like most cavalry pistols, it has a lanyard loop on the butt so that it can be easily recovered if dropped.

The pistol is nicely dated 1868 (863) on the lock below the cap bolster, with an Austrian Imperial Eagle proof on the lock plate tail. The top of the barrel is faintly marked ZEILINGER, for the famous Viennese gunsmith. There are also some markings on the breech of the barrel, however we cannot make them out.

Condition is very good, wit ha lovely matured oxidized patina on the metalwork, with no major rust or pitting. There is the expected powder burn around the cap lock bolster, and the muzzle end of the barrel has some denting. We tested the lock, and it holds properly at half cock and fires at full. However the tumbler is a bit worn, so half cock is very close to the nipple cone.

The wood work is beautiful, with a lovely dark brown color, showing some nice figure in the light. We do not see any major damage or repairs to the stock wood.

A very nice late European Cavalry Percussion pistol, ready to display!
